Choosing a cloud provider is one of those decisions that haunts you for years. Migration costs are real, vendor lock-in is sticky, and pricing models are intentionally confusing. At SV Soft Solutions, we have deployed production workloads across all three major providers. Here is what actually matters when you are making this decision in the Indian context.
AWS: The Default Choice
Amazon Web Services dominates with roughly 32% global market share and the most extensive service catalog. For Indian startups, AWS is the safe choice ÔÇö almost every DevOps engineer in India has AWS experience.
AWS strengths:
- Mumbai and Hyderabad regions ÔÇö two Indian regions mean low latency for local users
- Service breadth ÔÇö 200+ services covering every possible use case
- Startup credits ÔÇö AWS Activate provides up to $100,000 in credits for eligible startups
- Talent pool ÔÇö the largest pool of certified professionals in India
AWS weaknesses: Complex and opaque pricing. The bill will surprise you unless you set up detailed cost monitoring from day one. The console UI is functional but not friendly.
Azure: The Enterprise Bridge
Microsoft Azure is the natural choice if your organization already uses Microsoft products (Office 365, Active Directory, SQL Server). Azure has a strong presence in Indian enterprise IT.
Azure strengths:
- Three Indian regions ÔÇö Mumbai, Pune, and Chennai
- Hybrid cloud ÔÇö Azure Arc and Azure Stack make hybrid deployments (cloud + on-premise) smoother than any competitor
- Enterprise agreements ÔÇö significant discounts if your company already has Microsoft licensing
- .NET ecosystem ÔÇö best-in-class support for .NET, C#, and SQL Server workloads
Azure weaknesses: The portal can be slow and buggy. Documentation quality varies wildly between services. Some managed services (AKS, Functions) lag behind AWS equivalents in maturity.
GCP: The Developer's Favorite
Google Cloud Platform has the smallest market share (11%) but the highest developer satisfaction scores. GCP's strength is in data, analytics, and developer experience.
GCP strengths:
- Mumbai and Delhi regions ÔÇö good coverage for Indian workloads
- Pricing transparency ÔÇö per-second billing, sustained use discounts applied automatically, committed use discounts
- GKE (Kubernetes) ÔÇö the best managed Kubernetes service, unsurprisingly since Google invented Kubernetes
- BigQuery ÔÇö nothing in AWS or Azure comes close for serverless data analytics
- Firebase ÔÇö if you are building mobile apps, Firebase alone justifies considering GCP
GCP weaknesses: Smaller service catalog. Fewer Indian developers with GCP experience. Google's history of shutting down products creates trust concerns for some enterprises.
Cost Comparison for Common Workloads
For a typical Indian startup workload (2 app servers, 1 database, load balancer, CDN, monitoring):
- AWS: approximately 15,000-25,000 INR/month on reserved instances
- Azure: approximately 14,000-22,000 INR/month with reserved pricing
- GCP: approximately 12,000-20,000 INR/month with committed use discounts
These are rough estimates. Actual costs depend heavily on data transfer, storage usage, and additional services. All three providers offer cost calculators ÔÇö use them before committing.
Our Recommendation
- Default choice for most startups: AWS ÔÇö largest ecosystem, easiest to hire for, most learning resources
- If you use Microsoft stack: Azure ÔÇö the integration benefits are genuine and significant
- If you are data/ML heavy: GCP ÔÇö BigQuery, Vertex AI, and TPU access are compelling
- Budget-conscious startups: Consider DigitalOcean or Hetzner for simple workloads at 50-70% lower cost
